Yaz El-Hakim, Hugh Bassett-Jones and Dominic Northcott, all staff at the University of Winchester, had a vision for “the best, most comprehensive, most intuitive and free of charge directory for anyone wanting to take part in any extreme or adrenaline sports anywhere in the country.” They made their vision a reality after securing a Business Start-Up award, and have since joined up with Bex Lewis and Helen Owten who take on the social media side of the company. Facing stiff competition from others at the University of Winchester, Super Fun Days Out was one of only two successful businesses in the November 2008 rounds for new business start-ups, and the funding has been put to good use.
The Business Start Up Scheme
The Business Start Up Scheme provides a grant of up to £5000, mentoring and access to the full range of facilities in our Enterprise Suite the Research and Knowledge Exchange Centre, such as a spacious bookable meeting room. It is open to University of Winchester students, staff and graduates (last five years), located in Hampshire. Applications, in the form of a business plan, are judged by a business panel, and shortlisted applicants are invited to present their proposal to the panel. There are two award rounds a year, in May and November. Read more on the Business Start Up Scheme homepage.
