X In The City (date moved to April 2011) #extremesport

“X in the City is still on but we have moved to a new date of Easter 2011

Since the launch of X in the City at the start of the year, the event has grown in complexity and scope, growing from 15 to 31 participating sport…s and from 6,000 m² to 17,000m² to become the largest participation action sports event in the world.

We have created something very special and we are determined to do it justice. We feel that in order to deliver the level of visitor experience required the best course of action is to move the dates.

With the increased size and numbers of the competitions and the increasing size and complexity of the key activity structures such as the Wake Park, Ski Slope and Free Running course, we are creating some unique content, and we want to make sure we get it exactly right.

Additionally as the show profile has increased, we have been presented with a number of other attractions and sports for inclusion in the event and we want to find a way to include them. As a consequence we would rather re-schedule so that we can make the event even better.

All tickets for the event will be refunded and to say thanks for the support, all those people who booked will get complimentary entry to X in the City next April. The refund process will be handled by our Box Office Partner The Ticket Factory. We will close the Box Office temporarily while we do this.

We will have some exciting news to tell you about the new developments in a couple of weeks so watch for updates.”

Check out the website for up to date information, check out the Ski & Snowboard Show happening the same weekend – check out the comments in X in the City, as the Ski & Snowboard Show are giving away 100 tickets!

We, of course, have some fabulous activities you can undertake – check out the search map, click over ’142′ hovering over Eastbourne and zoom into events in London, e.g. Tower Paintball, BigSquid, London Skate, and Hyde Park Stables.

Goodwood Festival of Speed 2-4 July 2010

“The Festival of Speed is the largest motoring garden party in the world – a unique summer weekend that brings together an impossibly heady mix of cars, stars and motor sport ‘royalty’ to create the largest car culture event in the world. Held in the immaculate grounds of Goodwood House, this annual hill-climb event is a true celebration of motor sport and all things automotive.”

This is one event that, just one day, I’d love to get to! As the event claims “no other event combines such a diverse and authentic collection of cars and motorbikes with a star-studded line-up of drivers in one place.” The event includes everything from the most modern of cars, including current Formula 1 drivers, to vehicles from the 19th Century. “All cars and motorcycles are painstakingly selected to reflect the event’s major theme of the year, and to ensure their authenticity and provenance, all competing vehicles are presented in their original condition and livery.”

Find out more about the event.

If you go to the event,  @sfdo would love to hear a review from you!

Extreme Sport 360 Festival, Scarborough

“A MAJOR new festival is coming to Scarborough in September. The “extreme sport 360″ festival will run between Friday September 17 and Sunday 19 at the Open Air Theatre.

It will feature competitions in up to six extreme sport events and will also include a concert, with a big headline act announced next month for the Saturday night.

Surfing, skateboarding and brush- boarding events have already been confirmed and the organisers, the Cirrion Group, are negotiating with three more sports.

The event will also link in with the annual motorbike races at Oliver’s Mount. Fiona Sidwell, chief executive of Cirrion, said: “Our ultimate aim is to build an extreme sports centre in Scarborough that will compete with the main European extreme sports destinations”

Keep Up with Olympic Tweets

The official Olympic site is making great use of Twitter to demonstrate what is going on at the Winter Olympics: the above is effectively a series of Tweet Clouds demonstrating the big topics on Twitter at the moment, and Olympic Tweets pulling the Tweets of those involved in the action. Plenty of videos to catch up with too!

Stephen Baldwin: Assalt Tour

“Stephen set up a company called Global Breakthrough Ministry and staged a very popular arena tour around the US, which mixed extreme sports and evangelism. A spin-off video called Livin It, which he directed, has gone on to sell 500,000 copies.”

There’s some awesome pics of skateboards in the air on the site, from the event, hosted in 2008.

Miranda Sawyer meets with Stephen Baldwin, soon after his eviction from the Celebrity Big Brother house: full interview.

Mongolia: TeamGotMilk

Craig Philbrick and Matthew Scarfe are taking part in the famous 2010 Mongol Rally, in a team named “Got Milk“.

“The world is just a little bit too safe. Gone are the days where the edge of the map called you forth to discover what lay beyond – satellite maps and GPS have it laid out before you leave the armchair. What if you want things to go wrong? What if you want a bit of unknown in a world full health and safety measures? What if the words “adventure travel” conjure images of old ladies on a guided tour to Everest base camp with all the danger and real adventure neatly removed? What you need is the Mongol Rally.

Imagine yourself in the middle of the gargantuan Kazakh desert, your car slowly being shredded by the dirt track your map says is a motorway, completely lost hundreds of miles from civilisation with no back up crew to rescue you. Just you, your wits, your increasingly brown pants, a car that the laws of physics say shouldn’t have got you past Peckham Rye and a slightly angry looking man with a gun.

If this all conspires to make you think, “my goodness that’s a terribly silly idea” the Mongol Rally is probably not your cup of salted Mongolian tea. If, on the other hand, you think “hang on by gad, that’s exactly what I need”, you’ve found your calling, so read on to find out what you’ll be doing next summer.”

The event is not just for adventure, but Team Got Milk are taking part in aid of Mercy Corps… and they’re still seeking sponsorship.

“A third of the way around the earth, from Europe to Mongolia via a plethora of countries most people haven’t heard of in a car that has an engine with no bigger than 1 litre. Starting from England, Spain and Italy, the rally finishes in the Mongolian capital Ulaan Baatar around four weeks and a whole heap of adventure later. It’s between about 8 and 10,000 miles depending on the route you choose to throw your trusty steed at. We don’t believe in telling you what to do or where to go as this is supposed to be an adventure not a cosy guided driving tour, so the world is pretty much your oyster.”

Whiteair 2010: Earlybird Tickets

White Air was founded in 1997 by extreme sportsman Nigel Howell. Starting as a wind and surf-based event due to the attraction of the UK’s superb beaches, it has rapidly expanded and now is the most prestigious international festival on the calendar involving some 40 sports on water, land, beach and in the air – combined with arts, music fringes, and extensive entertainment including the awesome Live Stage which features 2 huge nights of music on the beach front with top level groups each year. Banff: Radical Reels Film Festival

Visit the site to find a screening near you…. there’s some amazing extreme sports caught on camera, and reminds me why I’ve wanted to visit that area for such a long time – one day!

“The Safest, Most Dangerous Sport in the World”

“If I die, it’ll be doing something enjoyable – it’s got to happen sometime, why not today?” Visit the website of ‘Tough Guy‘, “The original and toughest test of its kind anywhere in the World. Run on the last Sunday in January, you will need every last ounce of mental and physical strength you can muster to rise to this challenge. Your fear of heights, tight spaces, fire, water and electricity will be tested to the max. Everyone bar the very toughest will be beaten!” If you’re feeling fit enough, there’s still time to enter, and it’s not restricted to ‘guys’ either!

ITN Source describe it as a “horrific two-mile obstable course in the Tough Guy race in Staffordshire, United Kingdom, designed by a former Grenadier Guardsman near the village of Old Perton. The annual race starts in the village with an eight-mile run, before competitors have to wade through energy-sapping mud and plunge into ice-cold water to reach the finishing post. As if this wasn’t bad enough they also have to negotiate flames, smoke bombs and taunting marshalls. The course is so bad that runners are required to sign a disclaimer which reads: “It’s my own bloody fault for being here” just to take part.”

Adrenalin Sports on Video

I can’t find any more information on this festival, aside from that it was around this time last year… looks like fun! YouTube descriptor says it was under-attended, but looks like thos who were there had a complete blast!

Extreme Cooking

Once we finally got to our destination, it was all systems to go… into this rather ‘cleverly designed’ kitchen, where this week we were cooking for 50 (I think next week they’re cooking for 80, so I got off lightly)… I’ve not cooked on a winter trip before, just camp cooking (which is always bung it all in a big pot and ladle it out!)…, so I felt this qualified as an extreme sport… and meantime from the windows I could see some beautiful snow!

Such a large kitchen you have...

We did the pizzas early – 16 in total – took quite some time (even once we’d found enough trays!) – great upper arm exercise… and some of that flour did make its way into the pizza….

So many pizzas...

Just one of the small cooking pots – with John – who loves getting out to ski and often works in an outdoor sports centre too… and really knows how to use “the flavourings” in the kitchen:

Such small pots

It’s important to know the opening times, especially when you might need onions for 50…

Important to understand opening times...

—————————————–

Thought I’d add a few more…

Christmas Dinner is almost ready, and hoping that Stephen (green t-shirt) is going to write us some info on bouldering – he’s also a snowboard instructor, so maybe we can get some more info out…

Christmas Dinner coming up...

Ben asked me to save some of my Chocolate Torte for him – so I saved him an EXTREMELY large piece – which he didn’t quite finish! Ben had done about 5 days of skiing by the end of two weeks and was doing pretty well…

If you don't like Christmas Pudding...

We like to make cake’s for our guest’s birthdays … and Louis was 7, so John pulled together this design based on a red run down the ‘Eiger’ – Louis loved it!

Happy 7th Birthday!

At the end of the week, everything gets deep cleaned… wondering if Tim was taking cleaning the oven a little too far – that’s a little extreme…

Extreme Oven Cleaning

And when all the cleaning is done, we sit down with a breakfast of sausage, bacon, scrambled egg & pancakes.. nice!

The Big Breakfast

Extreme Travelling

On December 18th, Bex thought she was heading for the ski haven of Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland, to enjoy some fab snow, and enjoy cooking for 50 over Christmas week, but the journey itself turned out to be very extreme – and when later in the week, Jamiroquai’s ‘Travelling Without Moving‘ came out of iTunes shuffle – that should have been our anthem!

Clacket Lane Junction

Even getting to Oak Hall’s base in Otford was hairy – this was the car park at Clacket Lane Services. Well, one of my aims is to get onto one of those driving days where they teach you to control the car in dangerous conditions… could definitely have done with that on Friday!

M20, en route to Dover

Well, the coach clock is telling the right time – about this time we should have been through the Eurotunnel, but as they seemed to be having some issues (and as we later discovered, many people spent the night trapped in the tunnel without light/food/heat, so was glad wasn’t in there), we decided to head for Dover… Shortly after we thought we’d made a wrong move as we joined a VERY long queue…A20, shot 1

The lorry is heading back the wrong way to join Operation Stack (never knew what that was before)… this was an amusing moment, around 9am, Ed Farries, our ski instructor, had slept very well – pulled up his eyemask – and woo-hoo, we’re still in Dover!

A20, No 2

12 noon, moved around 2 miles! Why, oh why, didn’t we get the skis out of the trailer and try riding down the rails… maybe it would have been the presence of the Police… to whom we were offering hot coffee and chocolate biscuits as we passed by. Made a change for them from the people yelling at them!

A20, pt 32pm, we’ve moved a little further, and the kids are being amused by Hannah Montana! We finally got on the ferry 5pm, and arrived in Lauterbrunnen around 7.30am, which meant those guests who felt able after 2 nights on the coach were able to ski-up and out… most got out by 10.30am, leaving us free to start cooking…

Really – if we’re talking extreme – that was it… my friend flew back from New Zealand in the same time as it took us to get from Otford to Lauterbrunnen!

50 Foot Waves in Hawaii

Eddie Aikau

“Some of the world’s best surfer’s take to the seas for a rare Hawaiian extreme sports competition as massive waves batter Waimea Bay beach.

It is the ultimate surfing competition held only when the waves are big enough.

Today many of the world’s most experienced surfers raced to compete in the “Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikua Competition” in Waimea Bay, Hawaii.

“The Eddie” – named in honour of a famed surfer and lifeguard who disappeared in 1978 while trying to rescue passengers from a capsized canoe – is often held at late notice as it relies on waves of 20ft or higher. It has only been held seven times before – with the last competition in 2002.”

Read the full story on Channel 4 or visit ‘The Eddie‘ website. (including photos).

Base Jumping“A first skydive in 1992 led Jason Bell to a love of jumping from very high places.

“I was hooked,” the 38 year-old West Virginia native said. “I’m one of those people who always wanted to skydive. If I say I’m going to do it, I do it.”

Bell will be one of several hundred jumpers who will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Bridge Day by BASE jumping off the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, W.Va., on Oct. 17 and parachuting to the ground below.

Bridge Day is the one day each year that jumping from the 876-foot-high bridge is legal.”

Blog Action Day: Climate Change

Blog Action Day 2009You can read about Climate Change on Wikipaedia. Over the past few hours (ever since 15th October started somewhere in the world) blog entries have been launched on the topic of climate change, and Change.org, the organisers of this event, recommend 7 YouTube videos you should watch for Blog Action Day.

As extreme/adrenalin sports enthusiasts, how can we balance out our desire to move through the world at a crazy speed, and a desire to contribute to the environment?  Groups such as ‘Surfers Against Sewage‘ have very much demonstrated how this can be done, and each time we make a conscious decision to gain our adrenalin buzz from a sport which has a low ecological footprint, the better – with each occasion making a difference.

In this vein, this blog post identified some sports in which you can still get your heart pumping, but are kinder to the environment, than maybe some others are.!

Hiking
In keeping to well marked trails, hiking is a low-environmental-impact activity. Enjoy the fresh air, enjoy the views, and gain a “big picture perspective”, which should leave you encouraged to return home and undertake more eco-options within the home.

Outdoor Pursuits

Those working in outdoor pursuit centres have a great love for the environment, many are set in areas of outstanding natural beauty, and your co-ordinators will educate you in the best way to undertake your adrenalin pursuits with respect for the environment… amusing video below:

Bush Craft

Learn to survive in the great outdoors, Bushcraftuk can tell you  more – join the forums – and there’s no need to think you need to be Ray Mears – although we have a video of him here!

Outdoor Swimming

No need to pollute the world with chlorine – find an appropriate lake and dive in – just ensure that you’re body is not covered in a number of pollutants!

The Outdoor Swimming Society offers a number of options in the UK: “…unlike a pool there are no lane ropes and no walls to push off from, all of which ensure that extra distance is covered. Wind can make water choppy and rough, which takes a bit of getting used to, and chillier water will reduce your swimming speed. The biggest thing for most people is getting used to the look of natural water (it’s green – and there are no lines on the bottom!). Just expect a sense of surprise the first time you feel the squelch of mud under your feet or look down and find you can’t see the bottom. Keep breathing normally; focus on the sky above you or the silky feel of fresh water, and you’ll soon relax into it.”

Freefall Skydiving Simulator

Don’t wish to fly up in a plane, but want to experience the feeling of freefall? Try a simulator, and experience it without ever leaving the ground!

Fishing

If carried out responsibly, with concern for fish stocks,  fishing can be a great sport. Chill out at the side of a lake, catch your dinner, no need to travel too far from home.

Archery

Archery – all that’s required is a field, a board and some arrows… or maybe you need a little more than that, but very low environmental impact!

What other extreme and adrenalin sports can you identify as being particularly environmentally-friendly?
