Unicef: Sport in a Box

Unicef: Sport in a BoxCan’t decide what to get someone for Christmas?

“The UNICEF Sport-in-a-Box kit has proved to be a popular item during emergency situations, allowing up to 90 children to engage in team sports activities and interact with other children and have fun!

The Sport-in-a-Box kit is a recent introduction, created as a result of experience gained during several emergencies. It is now more widely appreciated that sport is an effective trauma therapy for children displaced by war and natural disasters.

The kit contains items for teachers and students and is supplied in a lockable metal box. The kit can cater for up to 90 children playing simultaneously.

The kit includes balls for several types of games, coloured tunics for different teams, chalk and a measuring tape for marking play areas and a whistle and scoring slate. The composition of this kit has been a challenge, not only because of regional and cultural differences in children’s sports activities and games. For example, following a gender analysis of the kit, and in light of UNICEF’s priority of girls’ education, additional items aimed at encouraging physical activity and sport amongst girls were added.”

Macau: Skywalking

Tourists enjoy walking around the outside of the Macau Tower

“Away from the glitzy shows, travellers looking for a different thrill will relish a night-time visit to the top of the Macau Tower. It is highly recommended: from the viewing platforms located 230m above the street, the lights of the city spread out before you like a giant glittering carpet. Come here before 7.30pm and the brave can walk along the outside rim of the tower, connected only by a safety harness. Not for the faint of heart.

If this Skywalk doesn’t get enough adrenalin pumping you could also try the planet’s highest bungee jump at the Macau Tower: a 233m, 200kmh plunge. Take the plunge and a video, t-shirt and membership of the exclusive Macau Tower bungee jump club will be your reward.

And if you’re still after an extra extreme-sports delivered rush, you can take part in a two-hour outdoor climb up the mast to the very top of the 338m high tower. A head for heights is a must, but the view from the top is one that only a few get to experience.”

Toby Paterson: Architect

New Façade, 2003“Toby Paterson’s appreciation of architectural forms and structures developed from skate boarding around abandoned concrete buildings. From this perspective he experienced cities and buildings as spaces to navigate; a collection of isolated forms and surfaces that could then be translated into paintings and sculptures. He works in a variety of forms, from large-scale sculptural assemblages and architectural wall drawings to small paintings on paper and Perspex. Paterson’s work explores the integration of art and architecture. He is influenced by his personal experience of the built environment, with a particular focus on post-war architecture and an interest in the processes of abstraction within visual art. nspired by the language of Modernist architecture his modular pavilion will introduce an new feature into the multifaceted landscape of the Southbank.”

WorldWide Challenge: Kilimanjaro

Scaling Kilimanjaro

At 5,895m, Mt. Kilimanjaro is one of the largest volcanoes ever to break through the Earth’s crust. Your challenge is to reach its summit.

Your trek starts in the rainforests of Lemosho Glades and heads upwards as you acclimatise on Shira Plateau. From here you will catch a glimpse of your goal Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s main ice-capped peak. You continue via the beautiful Southern Flank, Barranco Wall and Barafu Route.

Temperatures drop at night, allowing you to enjoy the crisp cool air under the star-studded African skies. During the days you’ll rise higher; often looking down on a sea of clouds.

There are excellent success rates (96%) for trekkers reaching the summit, but don’t underestimate the challenge ahead. Most trekkers will never have experienced a day as tough as this, with 1,000m of ascent and over 2,000m of descent. It is however victory day!

Costs and Dates:
There are a range of 2010 dates available for this trip, with corresponding minimum fundraising targets. For more information, or if you would like to take part in this challenge, please contact Claire on 020 7799 2111 or email claire@sparks.org.uk

Roller Derbys

Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut is the film “Whip It”, a comedic action film, which has received a good rating on IMDB also, is based around a teenage girls desire to no longer be a misfit, but to join an adrenalin sport which gives her an opportunity to own her own voice.

Roller Derbys?
Although the sport still skates the thin line between legit competition and trashy entertainment, derby is making its second big swing back into the mainstream.

How is it played? Here’s the gist: Each team has five skaters, one of whom — the jammer — scores points. The teams play two 30-minute periods, each split into a series of jams, which are races for points. The blockers start in a pack ahead of each team’s jammer, whose job it is to lace through the pack and score points by legally passing the other team’s blockers.

Action Man returns as an extreme-sports hero

Action Man“LONDON – Action Man makes a return to toy shelves today after a three-year absence dressed not in military uniforms but as more modern heroes such as extreme-sports participants.

Tesco is stocking thousands of the Action Man figures that despite having apparently been discharged from the armed forces continue to come armed with a range of weapons.

The range, which starts at £5, includes a scuba patrol and a desert moto-cross bike rider.

Action Man first appeared in Britain in 1966. Earlier this year the Ministry of Defence licenced a range of authentic HM Armed Forces action figures.”
